Recently I –Lord Abortion- had the dark pleasure of interviewing one of the Darkwell clan –Roland – and below are the contents of that interview
Well first off let’s start with telling all the corpses out their where you guys are from.
Well we are from Innsbruck/Austria.
When did you know that a band was the thing for you?
Hmm, with the money I earned from my first job when I was 14 I bought a bass guitar, searched for some friends who could play and it just simply came together. Didn’t know it would be so much work though.
What were some of your jobs you had previous to Darkwell?
Well I worked at a Mc Donald’s, became a cab driver, and now I run a studio.
Worked your way right on up their. Who were some of your major influences musically?
Hmmm, very difficult… A lot of metal bands… A lot of Goth bands. I’d have to say over all Black Sabbath and Fields of Nephilim were my biggest influences.
Nice choice, nice choice indeed. Were your parents at all supportive of your Goth life style?
Not really… They declared me for mad!!! But couldn’t do anything against *G*
Were you ever picked on in school or growing up?
Nope… Wasn’t ever a problem here.
Got any funny road stories?
At one show in France I nearly broke my arm when I stumbled over a monitor speaker… I was drunk of course.
What was your first show like?
I think a lot of people get drunk when they are nervous… I know I did. I probably played a lot of crap.
Do you indulge in any mind altering substances (weed, crack, cheap whisky)?
Yes, mainly alcohol! My favorite is Absinth.
Ahhh yes, Absinth is what champions are made of. Now from drugs, to a sedation of a different nature. Do you have a religion of any sort?
Yes and No. I don’t believe in common organized religion, but humans need something to hold on to. For the moment I try to believe in myself. It has worked so far so we shall see.
Was their anything you ever held to be true? Myself I believe that when you die you no longer exist anywhere… No soul.
Hmm, their could be some kind of psychic energy that remains but if we stick to facts I think you are right.
While we are gettin’ “DEEP” tell us about the personal feelings expressed by your songs.
What we try to express emotionally with our music is something like a profile of all our emotions. Then there is also somehow a kind of collectiveness in the band which forms those emotional ideas anew. All together you can find what is written between the lines, but in any case those emotions are dark, but that shouldn't qualify them as evil or good…
Yeah I never thought of it that way… But a little EVIL (666) never hurts in a song. Why don’t you give us a little bit of a behind the scenes lyrical run down of two of your songs? Pick the songs that you personally identify with.
A very important one for me is Armageddon which describes the end of all religion in the final battle… But it's not the end of all mankind. It is just a positive new start. All religion was destroyed and the human remains and can focus on a world without any disturbing believes… Secondly, our most popular song on MP3.com Realm of Darkness is important to me as it focuses on the threads a mind has to deal with, it also describes how often we are so close to madness…
I have to agree that those two tracks are two of my favorites as well. What’s your favorite song that another band performs?
Of all time? Hmm… Have to Be Pink Floyd – The Wall
What is your current agenda for the band?
Well I would like to start playing outside of Europe and we just finished the final touches on our new MCD “Conflict of Interests”
What bothers you most about society?
Religion! I Hate Religion! I also hate how it is so often used as a fundamental structure for society!
Well Thanx for all your time and last but not least is their anything you would like to say to your fans?
Thanx to all who bought “Suspiria” and we hope to see you all soon at a Darkwell concert.
Well that's all… Thanx from your dark minister; spunk loving, monk fucking, LOrd AbOrTiOn!!!
