Cannibal Corpses' third outing, “Tomb of The Mutilated” is one of the best and most important albums in the American Death Metal scene, and in the world wide Death Metal scene in general.
Two years after 1991's “Butchered At Birth”, “Tomb…” came out of nowhere and slapped every Death Metal fan in the face. The 9 tracks found herein are all classics. Tracks like “Entrails Ripped from a Virgins C**t”, “I Cum Blood” and the all time favourite “Hammer Smashed Face” still impress today. This time around they opted for a heavier production and it has a devastating effect. The guitars shred away whilst the rhythm section blasts with the best of them. “Hammer Smashed Face” shows why Cannibal Corpse are considered innovators and not followers. (Without them, we wouldn't have the second and third wave of Death Metal Bands like Deeds of Flesh, Pyaemia and Decapitated, all of whom have undeniably been influenced by them). The aforementioned song is four and a half minutes of ultra brutal Death Metal, topped with Chris Barnes' trademark growls. Seeing them perform on Ace Ventura – Pet Detective brings back memories even now. “I Cum Blood” starts with an awesome blast beat and then develops into a mid – paced monster.
“I just took that knife and I cut her from her neck down to her anus and caught hold of her vagina and ate it”. When the spoken intro to a song is as eerie as the above extract, you know there's some serious shit happening here. Another brutal riff and we also get to Alex's bass strings twanging. Further songs like “Split Wide Open”, “The Cryptic Stench” and “Beyond the Cemetery” reinforce why this will be considered as Cannibal Corpses' finest hour. Even if they are releasing less memorable albums today, with “Tomb of the Mutilated” they demonstrated a band at their peak and luckily for us, we can hear where it all began.
