Cold Blood Industries brings the world a new thrash/death crossover release by Crustacean with their release INSANIAC. This 12 song effort has shades of Bay Area thrash such as Vio-Lence mixed with slightly heavier vocals similar to what can be found on Death’s SYMBOLIC. ‘Deathtrap’ is a brutal track herein which reminds me a fair amount of a thrash ripper ‘Bodies On Bodies’ from Vio-Lence’s debut ETERNAL NIGHTMARES. I really like the heavy riffing used which relies heavily upon typical, but forceful, thrash chords and at times a Zakk Wylde styled distortion. Throughout the madness there is also what I believe to be some unmistakable Venom influences, think of the CAST IN STONE album.
The only downside is found in the overall shortness of the songs creating a bit of a stagnant, sameness feel throughout INSANIAC. The 12 songs put the CD at just over 35 minutes and most of the tracks are just over 3 minutes while ‘Satanizer’ falls short of the 2-minute mark. Some additional solos could be added, and I don’t really like when tracks such as ‘Penance’ jump directly into the vocals without any musical buildup. Without a proper intro it often feels like you are listening to the same song one after another. But shortcoming aside, the music is very aggressive and life-like, and if you are looking for some heavier death/thrash metal inspired from some of the best, Crustacean might do the trick.
