Cool Songs: Take Control and Maximum Destruction
Destructor was discovered in 1984 by Auburn Records president Bill Peters while playing their very first gig in support of the newly recorded demo Smash Your Skulls With Power. This first show made such an everlasting impression on the mind of Bill Peters, that no more then a few weeks later Destructor became the latest band to be signed to Auburn Records. Right after being signed the band immediately entered Suma Recording Studios and began work on their first and only full length LP Maximum Destruction. After the albums release in 1985 Destructor spent the greater part of the next two years touring in support of the album. Finally in 1987 the band was able to take a break from touring and begin work on a new album. Unfortunately during the recording process of the album set to be called Decibel Casualties bass player Dave Innicca was innocently murdered. This tragic event forced the Destructor to halt all work on the new material and would ultimately result in the disbanding of the band. It would be fourteen years after the release of Maximum Destruction Before another label would take interest in having anything to do with Destructor. In 1999 Listenable Records Approached Dave Overkill with the idea of remastering Destructors first LP and luckily for us all Dave agreed and thus Maximum Destruction was reissued with 6 bonus tracks.
Maximum Destruction remastered starts out with the original nine songs from the 1985 version of the album, each of these tracks explode with even more power now that they have been revamped. The sound quality of songs like Overdose, and Iron Curtain has been vastly improved from their original state. It is just simply amazing to be able to hear all of the original material cleaned up and brought up to date. You can really tell from the quality of these songs that Destructor really did eat sleep and breathe metal. But what really throws this reissue over the top is the six additional tracks that it contains. These six songs are made of live and unreleased material that Destructor had collected over the years. However out of all the six tracks 2 of them really stand out as being the best and they are the 2 live versions of Destructor, and Maximum Destruction. These tracks are just an example of the immense power that Destructor has when they play live just hearing them makes me wish I could have had the chance to see the preform live.
Listenable Records has taken an already classic record and made into something even better. Maximum Destruction to me is a prime example of what metal should sound like. This is defiantly an album that you need to have in collection.
