Leaves Eyes debut album was an impressive debut, because as far as I was concerned they went for the less is more approach and created a beautiful collection of songs that you could listen to no matter what mood you found yourself in. There were the soothing songs and the more upbeat ones, all falling into place when listened too together.
Now, barely a year later, their second album has already been released and I am happy to report that it is a huge step forward for the band.
This time around, the first thing that hits the listener is the huge sound. The instruments have been filled out and the drums sound incredibly powerful. Things start off calmly with the title track which tells of the discovery of a new land called Vinland. Stunning double layered vocals carry the song before they launch into my favourite song on the album – Farewell Proud Men. Nice guitars and theatrical vocals show that Leaves Eyes are turning into real leaders.
First single Elegy carries on the tradition of quality songs with a sing along chorus that you will find yourself humming for days (at least I was) and some nice lead work at the same time.
There are some weaker points on the album where the quality of the compositions doesnt match the others, but this doesnt detract from the fact that this is a fine album. Sure they slow things down at times, however this allows vocalist Liv Kristine to show off her talents, of which she has many.
The Digipak version comes with various extras that you can play on your PC, but as I couldnt be bothered to get Quicktime, I wasnt able to play them. Shame.
On the strength of the music alone, this should be an essential purchase. A perfect soundtrack for the summer and a chance to hear one of the best bands around at the moment.
