What the hell? Since when did Trustkill start signing lite rock emo bands? Trustkill has long been the bastion for harsh, abrasive Hardcore/Metalcore, however with signing of Roses are Red (and to a lesser extent Buffalo’s ‘It Dies Today’) it indicates an attempt to branch out and embrace other forms of indie style rock. I’m not convinced that it’s a good thing and Trustkill is certain to take some heat for it. To me, Roses are Red sound like a band that would be much more comfortable on a label like Epitaph, touring on ‘Warped’ with bands like Good Charlotte and Pennywise. Frankly, the addition of RAR to the Trustkill roster reeks of some sort of an attempt to cash in on the current emo-rock trend. I don’t like this stuff. It does absolutely nothing for me whatsoever. As far as I can tell, RAR are no worse, or no better the hundred of other emo-rock bands churning out their brand of whiny teenage love lost, broken heart drivel. Admittedly, RAR bring a stack of punkish energy and youthful enthusiasm to the table – for an emo band they rock harder than most. However, I just can’t get my head around it. It all sounds too rigid and play by numbers to be anything but standard fare. The limp production does the band no favors either – as with most of these type of bands, they always opt for the ‘soft commercial’ rock production – nothing too heavy please…no, we might be accused of being a metalcore band. Ironically, Roses are Red are undoubtedly a much better and heavier prospect in the live situation. Trustkill should hand this band over to a major label ASAP. ‘Conversations’ is bland standard emo rock. It has virtually no appeal for anyone reading this webzine.
