Good songs: Heir to the throne, The black sea, Northern wind
What an epic and expressive name: ORNA ANNON. This band from Northern Virginia/USA formed up through a symbiosis of the single bandmembers, after the persons played in a bunch of several other bands. Finally in the year 2004 they put money where the mouth is and decided to play viking metal in the future.
This is the first trial, the first demo of ORNA ANNON that is rotating in my CD player right now and I really have to say from the first moment on: I really like what I am listening to The guys connect very much viking metal with a little death and black metal. But they never let the melodies miss. Grunt, scream vocals respectively change with clean, partly a bit unstable male vocals. For myself, it would be cool to have more such screams 😉 The typical lyrics with dragons and swords are not allowed to miss, because they fit very well to the musical background music. But I also have to say: Either you love it or you hate it! So: Be careful while listening. 4 songs make you on the one hand smile of, on the other hand bang. Around 26 minutes it goes round and round and this with a mixture of classical headbang songs or a ballad (with unfortunately, unfortunately bad demo quality…) which definitely gets some extra points!
Traditionally in the first song Heir to the throne, a horn sounds and it preludes a riffing from the best quality. This in turn finds the prelude to the drums. And on the drums, the scream vocals are built on. The song structure and the resourcefulness of the songwriting are always good for a surprise. So there is no point in time where the affair becomes boring. Far from it! Even if you have listened to the CD for a few times, the true treasuries of the 4 track demo Cd are offered. Even more aggressive is the song called The Black Sea: March Of The Cephalopods. Singer Kyle Martin McCrane knows how to alternate.
Slowly we come to the end that opens the second part of the CD with the majestic Forodór. This is a weak song when you think of the good circumstances of ORNA ANNON, because the never-ending choir is very annoying.
ORNA ANNON show us with Northern Wind that they also can lower the drive and present a demo version of a metal ballad that could not be more catchy and emotional. Just the unfirm voice is a small thorn in my ears.
Unfortunately there is a little lack in the sound; too many keyboards. But maybe it HAS to be like that?! The European influences in the songwriting are noticed very much and I really love it!
Result after listening to the whole thing: Give me more, please!! Developable!
