Cool Songs: War profiteering is Killing us all, 17% 18 to 25, All Systems Fail, The Red Flag.
Im not all that familiar with Detroits Suicide Machines. My initial reaction to their name and in particular the title of their new album had me thinking hard as nails punk/hardcore. No doubt the political stance of these fuckers was going to be their driving force. The title track says so, as does nifty little numbers like Capitalist Suicide, Revolution is on the clearance rack in Sick and AKA-Requiem for the Stupid Human Race. These guys have got something to say. Moreover, theyd like you to think about what theyve got to say.
WPIKUA opens up with the title track. And it rips. Its not quite Discharge crust/punk, but the intensity and political aggression of this track is clearly apparent. It only last 87 seconds, but with this opening salvo Suicide Machines sets up this album in fine style. With fourteen tracks the majority of them just a touch over 2 minutes in length War is pretty much a frenzy of chaotic, fast paced hard edge punk anthems from beginning to end. Frontman Jason Navarro puts in his best larynx shredding performance that seamlessly falls in line with the bands musical philosophy.
For the heavy music fan, it is the faster, politically charged songs that will appeal most. Yet, having research a bit of background on this band, it appears that SM embraces the bouncy ska/reggae element in their music. If you cannot stand this style of music then there will be moments on War that youll have a bit of difficulty reconciling with. Fortunately, it is not a prevalent as previous albums and clearly with such an overtly political lyrical stance, it stands to reason that the majority of this sounds aggressive, pissed off and in your face. Still, dont say you havent been warned.
War.. is album number six for these guys. Were not dealing with some new punk/hardcore upstarts here folks. On the strength of this album, clearly they know what theyre doing. I like the aggression and intensity that the majority of this album conveys. Its honest and loaded with integrity and political insight. Always a good thing. Im sure these guys tear it up in the live setting also. You want proof, check the OZ dates below.
