The first full-length release from this Swedish firestorm of virtuosity was ushered in on the tongues of many in the underground. ..best unsigned band in the underground.. ..a younger hungrier, more venomous Suffocation.. were among the descriptions being thrown around in the blogs. The age and playing ability of the members created allot of hype when their demo began distributing around the U.S. in 2000. Everyone got so wrapped-up in this release living up to the hype that their preconceptions and expectations got in the way of just laying back and enjoying what is a damn good release.
These guys obviously have command of their respective instruments but there are also some truly creative song titling. Tracks such as Swarm of the Formless and A Presence Inexplicable project certain poetic ferocity that many bands of the genre are lacking. These guys manage some technically fearsome riffs that are well executed but I must admit the arrangements could use some work. Addition of some hooks, or otherwise memorable riffs to counterbalance the speed/tech. elements would tons of density to their songs. I think once Spawn of Possession get another release under their belts and their song arrangements reach the level of their playing abilities they will be unstoppable.
