If there was ever a soundtrack to the depraved mind of serial killer Ed Gein, then something akin to ‘Judas Goats & Dieseleaters’ is possibly as close as it you would expect. Adopting the infamous killers name as their own, Syracuse NY band deliver one of the most scathing and lyrically super-charged releases of the year. Signed to ‘Black Market Activities’ – a label that deals in seriously fucked up Spazz metal acts – Ed Gein suit the roster to a tee. However, as much as you might begin to form expectations about this bands sound and style based on their label associations, be prepared for a little more.

Ed Gein plays a brutal hybrid of sludge driven Grindcore with a massive emphasis on speed and jagged discordance at every turn. Musically the whole thing is just a wild, untamed ferocious beast that refuses to yield until the albums end. The ‘sludge’ factor is emphasised even more dramatically via the Chris Owens production who conjures a thick, gut churning atmosphere throughout the entire length. It’s a weighty affair, dirty as hell and driven by an authentic punk attitude than simply asks for no quarter. You’ll either revel in the brutal blast of this disc or you won’t.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect – other than their musical cacophony – is their politically and socially charged lyrical stance. You’ll need the booklet in front of you to read along with, but from the opening lines of ‘Robert Flaig’ its clear that Ed are a bunch of angry motherfuckers. Ed Gein don’t have much time for the general populations apathetic ways, the state of the worlds social fabric nor or the political agenda’s of their so called ‘leader’. They even take a generic swipe at violent rednecks at hardcore gigs and the hypocrisy of the clergy. Topically, not much of what Ed tackles is new, but the difference is the delivery – everything is extremely blunt, to the point and laced with an unhinged anger and rage that gives their music a whole new edge. Length wise, Ed don’t ask too much of the listener either – 12 of these tracks don’t push the meter above 120 seconds each, however the final track (a cover version of a track I know, but can’t name… I fucking hate that!) is listed as a 16 minute affair – yet, it too is only 3 & ˝ minutes long with 12 minutes of ‘insect calls in the night’ bringing it too an end.

Ed Gein is a frightening act; Harsh, noisy and unforgiving in every aspect of their sound. They’ll tear your head off both musically and lyrically. Certainly fans of brutal grind with smatterings of atonal riffage and a sludgy bottom end will find much to like here. Ed Gein – one of the more ferocious three piece acts you’re likely to hear this year!
