Cool Songs: Running Blind, Spiral, and Keep Away
Since the inception of Godsmack back in the late nineties they have set the standard for melodic metal by recording songs with fast powerful guitars and meaningful lyrics. Each and every album that is put out by Godsmack is an creative work of art. The quality of production is highly evident on each and every recording that has been put out by the band. You can tell these guys really care about how the final product is going to sound when complete unlike so many bands that only care about getting material out as fast as they can. Since their very first self-titled release Godsmack has produced at least one acoustical track per album. Finally in late 2003 Godsmack decided that it was high time that they release an album that consisted entirely of acoustic tracks. After several months of recording and hard work the band had a 7 song EP ready for release in the spring of 2004.
The Other Side begins with an acoustical masterpiece of a song called Running Blind which starts of quite softly with the light sound of acoustic guitars. As the track continues the sound of bongo quietly mix together with the guitars and then slowly but surely sully's vocals enter into the mix. Listing to the vocals and lyrics of Running Blind will slowly put your mind into a state of nirvana. The next track that really stood out to me is Touche which features 2 members of Drop Box. Touche like Running Blind starts off with light sound of guitars, within seconds of start the sound of the bongo drums slowly comes into play as does sully's vocals. As the song picks up the light sounds of a larger set of drums creep their way into the mix. But what really stands out about this track is the quality of the lyrics that are within the music. Unlike much of todays metal Godsmacks lyric's stand out as being something of beauty rather then being distasteful like so many other bands lyrics out today. One of the best songs on the entire EP is Spiral which is by far one of Godsmacks best songs to date. Spiral begins with the soft shaking of rattles as the bongo drums and guitars slowly work their way into the mix of the song. This track has as all the signs of being a major hit a long the same lines of Voodoo. The last song on the EP is an acoustic rendition of Awake which is currently the bands single from their current LP.
The Other Side EP has not left my CD player yet and remains my first choice when I am in the mood music, and once you get the chance to hear it you to will be unable to remove it from you stereo. I cannot stress the importance of making this a part of your current musical library take my word for it you will not be disappointed by doing so. This EP is defiantly worth its weight in gold be sure to buy it when it comes out on the 16th of March.
