Stormbringer formed 1998 with a metal style mixed with some hard rock, doom and thrash influences. In 1999 they produced a self title demo at the Pop Recording Studio in Somma Lombardo and went on the road in Italy with the 80's influenced metal songs.
After some success with their demo and garnering attention from a few metal mags such as 'Metal Hammer' the band started recording their latest, 'Don't Think, Obey!'. In June of 2005 My Graveyard Productions convinced the band to ink a deal to produce and distribute the album.
First look at the cover of this album can be a bit deceptive. It depicts some kind of space age cybernetic dominatrix
brandishing a sword with some humanoid creatures bowing at her feet. And what is that connected to her chest? You
don't know if you should laugh or sigh, its just Weird. Flipping the CD over and checking out the song titles brings things a bit more into focus. Title like 'Heavy Metal', and 'Red Moon Rising' is more representative of the music found within.
Considering the cover art it may be surprising that the lead singer is a woman! She sounds like a cross between Doro Pesch from Warlock and Brian Johnson of AC/DC. Wait did you read what I just typed? Again weird things going on here. Seriously the gal sings pretty good and there are not a whole lot of good female metal singers out there singing this kind of music, so you have to hand it to her!
Jessica Cavati is the lead sing and Emanuele Zinnanti on lead guitar. Gabriele Colombo caresses the keys and Emanuele's brother Simone thumps on his bass! The group is completed by Mauro Lovato on the skins.
On to the music at hand. This offering will please traditional metalhead. Although the drums are thinly mixed in places while the key elements of this group works great despite the percussion being watered down. The Hammond organ is well done with interesting accents during each song. Particularly the instrumental valley in the song “Mistery” is worth mentioning, which is heavily reminiscent of 70's Progrock with a little harder edge. The song “X” however is the strangest song here and a little amusing coming off completely contrary to the rest of the album the could have done without such “Gimmicks”. I recommend the band move away from these type of songs in the future!
The bottom line is the Stormbringer has some great talents to build on with the singing, crunching guitar work and the organ melodies. They have produced some decent compositions even if they are not necessarily considered mainstream. The band should stick with it! I definitely think there is a market for their music with any traditional metalhead! So all you metal heads get your hands on this release and remember, “Don't Think… Obey!”
