After three unsigned demo CD´s, ATARGATIS, founded 1997 in Regensburg/Germany, have released „Wasteland“ for Massacre Records.

The name ATARGATIS describes the name of the Syrian goddess of the energy of life.

ATARGATIS around singer Stephanie (also vocalist in Darkwell) is a gothic metal band for 100 %. Symphonic and much into keyboards with the typical female opera vocals. Nothing new, again no innovation on the gothic market.

The sound mantle fits! But already after the first song, the clear voice of singer Stefanie really devils with her simply souldestroying opera voice. I prefer listening to her normal vocals which are very subtile and clear. Stephanie´s opera voice can be a nice variation, but she should use her normal vocal voice for the main parts of the songs. Songs mainly live because of the vocals and here it just sounds boring, non-innovative and, as I have already said, only souldestroying; as well as the „hahaaaahaaahahaaa – oooooohhhhoooooo“-sing-alongs.

Unfortunately you cannot understand a word of the lyrics about human frailties and doubts, but endued with lights of hopes. But the songwriting partly has got really high quality: „Wasteland“ and „Selina (Widow of the moon)“ or also the fast track „Cradle of fern“…

Listen to Tristania instead. They are doing these things on a higher level.

It´s a pity.
