“Raping the Ancient” is the second full length release from Canada's Bloodaxe. It was originally recorded in 2002, but not released for two years and sounds pretty much the same as the first full length, “Bloodthrone”. It's more pure Viking Black Metal about the Norse Viking heritage and war and blood and guts and …..well..ya know.

I'm not a big fan of Norse Black Metal and this album, like the last one, shows little variation from song to song and comes off as one long 33 minute crunching, blast beating, screaching, noisy onslaught of Viking Blackness. If you like that stuff, you'll love it, but It doesn't really suit my tastes. I think the beginning intro and the ending outro are the best parts of the whole cd, however, “While You Lie Bleeding”, is not bad, showing a bit of melody and is a pleasant retreat from the blast beating barrage of seering Norse Black Metal and is over seven minutes long. However, it's not quite enough to make me shuffle through my cd collection to find it.
