Cool Songs: The Bearded Hustlers, Son of a Black Ram, On a Mule Rides the Swindler

One of the originators of hateful, American Black Metal—GRAND BELIAL’S KEY has issued its third full-length album “Kosherat.” As the title suggests, this is an album full of Judeo-Christian blasphemies. In today’s pc-controlled political climate, many may find the album’s anti-Semitic stance to be appalling and infuriating. For those who feel this way, maybe Black Metal is not meant for you, for it is an art form meant to make its listeners angry, uncomfortable, and down-right hateful. “Kosherat” excels in doing just that.

Grimnir’s vocals alone are enough to decimate Christendom. Whether it be his constant nightmarish echo effects or the pairing of ritualistic choir vocals with harsh black metal screeches (‘The Bearded Hustlers’), his vocals strike a nerve. Moreover, Grimnir’s vocals dictate the tempo and direction. For instance, ‘The Red Heifer’ begins with a raw, down-tuned death metal groove in the vein of DISMEMBER; when Grimnir’s vocals come in, the music changes direction into higher octave, black metal territory.

Filthy, putrid, old school, Stockholm-Swedish Death Metal guitar tones are a staple on “Kosherat.” The rawness of the slower, chunkier parts and grinding, low-end string manipulations will leave the listener feeling like a skinny, cherry white boy on his first day in the prison’s population. This tone accentuates the album’s sickening tone in every aspect. Without a heavy reliance on keyboards and classical instrumentation, Gelal’s menacing guitar tones create plenty of atmospheres. Because of the fiery tones he creates, the melodic parts waver in the air like fumes rising from a massive inferno, most likely being fueled by holy lumber.

With “Kosherat,” GBK has succeeded in separating itself from the pack of wannabe, black metal clones. Just like Poland’s BEHEMOTH, GBK has taken a little from the death metal scene and added it to the extremely talented brand of black metal they play to make an album not meant for lightweight posers. If your heart is dead and your blood runs black, “Kosherat” is a basic need.
