On my own personal Metal God list, the top three are Barney (Napalm Death), Tom Araya (Slayer) and Max Cavalera (Sepultura, Soulfly). So you know it's a huge deal for me whenever these guys come close to my home. Even more so for my best friend and assistant photographer, Donna, who loves Max more than anybody. So when Soulfly appeared on the Crocodile Rock Cafe schedule, the date was set in stone.
Crocodile Rock is a small place, a mere half hour away from my apartment. A good little sweatbox with good surfin' crowds, but it was a Tuesday night and the crowd was sparse. I didn't care and neither did Max. Me and Donna were front and center on the rail, right under Max's mic. The lights went out and the intro for Dark Ages started. Yeeeeeesss!!! Max is the shiiiaaaattt!! They walked out and kicked in to “Babylon” and it was insane. The surf wasn't really up cause of the sparse crowd, but the pit was swirling immediately. Then “Prophecy”!! F********k Yeah!! I was wiped out by the second song! Rizzo freakin' riiiiiips on guitar!! Then came “Bleed” and “Living Sacrifice”. Shiiiaatt. They allowed us to take pics so we were getting some good shots and then Max steps to the mic and screams “Roots Bloody Roots”!!! Yeah. Pandemonium! Everyone was jumping around like maniacs. Some surfers made a few rides. But this party had just begun! “Mars” came next and blew out the walls! “The Song Remains Insaaaaaaaaaane” yells Max and they fly in to that, followed by “Seek And Freakin' Strike!!” Holy Sheeeeeeooott!! I was dripping with sweat.
Then some classics. “Refuse / Resist”, “Innerself”, “Beneath – The – Remains”!!!!!!!!!! Blew the roof clean off!! Oh, but there was no stopping there. Ready, aim, fire!! “Execution style”. The new ones “Carved Inside”, “I and I”, “Arise Again” completely destroyed the place. But Max wasn't done. A rousing encore with “Back To The Primitive”, “Frontline” and “Eye For An Eye” completed the devastation. Max is a Metal F**king God!
