Beautiful misery 2003
It has been a time since FREAKHOUSE from California/USA have released their debut work Beautiful misery. In the year 2003, Nu Metal was much more up to date then nowadays.. However, FREAKHOUSE could draw attention with their album at least, if it was about the average marks. Unfortunately, the band could not win more than one flowerpot in German regions. And now I have this album in front of me…
The first impression is immediately: A KORN copy! But: a GOOD KORN copy with good attempts! You have to leave this to the Americans!
In addition, the quartet knows how it combine Nu Metal with rock/pop (!) and this works out very well within the album! Respect!
About the instrumentalists there is nothing to say: Everybody knows how to play his instrument!
Already with the beginning track “Disconnected” you get the impression, the quartet would have heard too much KORN, if you follow, above all, the vocals and partially the guitars. This impression wanders through the CD like a red thread. This is proved with the second song “Beautiful misery” once more. This song is presumably the live killer song of the band. Jumping is guaranteed!
Several songs go to the Nu Metal direction. The more astonishing sounds “Cleansing” which could come from a hard rock album.
In spite of the main influence of Nu Metal, you can hardly find a category. You just have to find out by yourself. Being a fan of KORN, you MUST!
The guitars have bite, the sound grooves and vocalist Rob Escher magnificently varies with his voice for this kind of music: a time like Jonathan Davis (“Beautiful misery”), sometimes like a rough hard rock (“Cleansing”) or even pop singer (“Liars Inc”). Conducive guitar solos are well used (“Man or Machine”). Every now and then a few synthetic sounds can be heard.
Interesting album, but unfortunately nothing that was unheard before.
Also I can say: tolerable debut album, even if there are no special surprises in shape of ultra killer songs.
It is still to be marked that FREAKHOUSE have a catastrophe upon the CD: a spectacular version of their title song! A mixture from Drum ' n bass and fast metal stuff! Then, nevertheless, I prefer the original version.
Result: You can absolutely listen to it!!
