Finlands HELWULF makes no qualms about what kind of music they strive to create, and that is ugly, grinding, raw Black Metal with few moments of melody. The two-piece band does not employ the videogame keyboards or extravagant solos played by many of their fellow countrymen. However, they do look to their countrys extreme music roots that being the filthy, nightmarish black metal of BEHERIT. HELWULF utilizes raw, tuned-down tones that will make your ears chap just from listening. The albums fourth track, Of Grand Desolation & Void is the ideal model for bands looking for the perfect raw sound. A mid, trotting pace in the vein of the mighty DARKTHRONE perfectly fits this songs nasty vibe.
That is where the comparison to BEHERIT ends because HELWULFs song structures are more traditional, picking a couple of catchy riffs and riding them for the duration of the songs. BEHERIT's music jumped around and changed their voice more often than little Regan on The Exorcist. Vocalist, S chooses one style of black metal vocalization that being a mid-range, throaty, grim voice, but does vary it in some spots like the clean, Nordic vocals on Mustan Auringon Kaste, he just doesnt have the multiple personalities of the BEHERIT camp.
HELWULFs triumphantly delivers an album of pure evil through extreme production values. Wolves of War and Blood does not fuck around. Its in your face, watching you squirm while running a razor blade through your skin. The only gripe about this album is the volume. Something this heavy should have a loud production, too. It's simply not loud enough. If HELWULF looks to albums like DISMEMBERs Death Metal for a production that is ear-drum-breakingly loud and extremely harsh, and keeps Satan in their heart in their minds, the next album should be fucking classic!
