Cool Songs: Herbststurme
Sounds of swirling, frigid winds open VINTERRIKETS album Der Letze Winter-Der Ewigkeit Entgegen. Soon ethereal keyboard passages and excessively distorted guitar take the place of the wind noises. The frosty musical atmosphere provides a cloak for Christopher Ziegler's voice. Just like viewing figures in the fog, you know he is there, but you cant identify what he is saying because his voice is highly distorted, screechy and low in the mix.
The first two tracks on this album are magical and compelling. If listeners were to hear just these two tracks or to hear a song on a compilation, these listeners may feel VINTERRIKET is something special. The problem with this disc is that the novelty of this bands sound wears off quickly because every song sounds the same. There is little variation within each song and from track to track. Each track begins with subtle, lulling keyboards, often the same notes or slightly varied. Ziegler's vocals get annoying, and the whole album becomes boring. Repetition is not bad for one song, especially if a band uses a couple different riffs repeatedly for different choruses and verses. It is hard to keep attention to a song that repeats the same music throughout the whole song with little or no variation. That is bad enough, but the whole album makes for good nights sleep!
