Cool Songs: Ode, Am brennenden nordlichen Firmament

VINTERRIKET and NORTHAUNT employ dark, ambience to pay homage to the snow-capped mountains and misty forests of their northern European environments. VINTERRIKET, a solo act also known for harsh, minimalist Black Metal, concentrates its efforts solely on noise scapes. There are few moments of conventional, structured music. One of those moments comes from VINTERRIKET on the track ‘Am brennenden nordlichen Firmament.’ This track consists of majestic keyboard notes, much like older MORTIIS. ‘Am brennendan…’ is like a strong dose of coffee or sex in the morning, you need it to get you going. The two bands’ atmospheres seem magical for a while, but listening to subtle, rising and falling noise can be difficult stay attentive to for over an hour. It is definitely mood music. Driving down the expressway at 75 miles per hour in the middle of the summer time is not the ideal setting for listening to this album. Winding through the Alps or Rockies in the midst of a blizzard would work just fine. This is the type of album that would work just fine on Cold Meat Industries or Relapse Records’ noise division—Release. If this kind of stuff is your thing, VINTERRIKET/NORTHAUNT is an album worth investing a few bucks.
