Demonlord reminds me of Nocturnal Rites in that they have all the markings of a black/death metal band, while hidden discreetly inside the cd case is a surprisingly solid power metal band! Demonlord hails from Hungary and has been around since 1997 when they released their first demo “Vengence”. In 2005 they released their aptly titled “Helltrust” containing some strong powermetal and epic hymns that according to Demonlord will pull under their spell!
Obviously, Demonlord's influences appear to be German since their sound drops into the familiar territory of
Grave Digger, older Helloween and Hammerfall. The song “Quo Vadis?” possesses the Iron Maiden-esque gallop to go along with a Hammerfall styled vocal choruses. Not a bad combination in my book! While it is obvious that English is not their primary language, the songs pack a punch with blazing guitarwork throughout. “Ruins In The Dark” features some noteworthy soloing that is likely to induce spontaneous headbanging.
“Overture To The End” is reminiscent of Helloween at their best. The oncoming train effect of “Darkest Place” makes
it a strong contender for best track on the CD right behind “Ruins In The Dark”. “Still Alive” toward the end of the disc is the first song to slow things down a bit as it features a welcomed surprise in acoustic guitar and vocal.
“Something Arrived” then returns to the maniacle attitude of the foregoing songs.
If Demonlord is any indication of what Hungary can produce in regards to heavy metal bands and their music, there is potentially a treasure trove of undiscovered territory! Highly recommended!
