Cool Songs: Who are you Now, Litania
Originating with Thrash/Death roots, Warsaw, Polands MOTORBREATH opted for a mix of Thrash and modern Heavy Metal on their latest effort Funeral Show. The said album is built around mid paced, crunch-driven, classic metal guitar rhythms, chugging Thrash rhythms, a persistent pounding drum rhythm, and memorable hooks. The overall guitar sound fits the music quite well, providing a hard groove. Grooves are a major focus on Funeral Show, sometimes looking to heavier, power grooves, other times concentrating on radio-friendly modern metal for inspiration. For instance, the first track Counterfeit God has a bridging riff that is reminiscent of a lick DISTURBED may create. Lead guitarist Marek Grzymkowski not only creates catchy rhythms and hooks, he also has a considerable amount of skill, displaying his guitar magic through various solo string manipulations.
Although MOTORBREATH has an affinity for the heavy, they also have a good grasp on how to create melody. The albums swan song, Litania is an excellent metal ballad sang entirely in Polish. Even though I have no idea what the singer is saying, this track is my favorite of the album. It sounds like a mixture of MEGADETHs Countdown to Extinction and PANTERAs Cemetary Gates. The main riff builds through muted chugging that opens at the right point to release the built up tension. Great track!
Vocalist Bartek Strutynski sounds like a lab experiment splicing the DNA of BATHORYs Quorthon (Viking-era), Phil from SACRED REICH, and James Hetfeld. He doesnt overdue his vocals, concentrating on a controlled mid-range, however; he accents the end of a verse or chorus quite well.
The best compliment one could give to this band is that they have their own sound, which is heavy enough to attract underground metal fans, but with enough melody and an up-to-date style to attract a more mainstream audience.
