Cool Songs: Beatus, Cosmic Migration
The American Heritage Dictionary defines augury as, A sign of something to come. The Canadian band, AUGURY must have been joking when they chose their name because their music does anything but tell you what is going to happen next.
The Montreal metallers may lull the listener into peaceful bliss with acoustic guitars and operatic vocals, but then grab the listener by the balls with pummeling double bass and death metal riffs. The listener may also hear laid back jazz or Celtic guitar rhythms then experience a barrage of black metal riffs. The most striking detail is all these musical combinations may occur in just one song.
Take the opening track, Beatus for example. Beatus begins with a majestic synth passage with the last note ringing out. Angelic female vocals fade in then provide the back drop to a death and power metal vocal duet. This vocal trio sets the stage for the down tuned death metal riff to come. The end of this track highlights the guitarists knowledge of his equipment. I have never heard the screechy noise effect produced here. Cosmic Migration starts out with an odd drum pattern and single string guitar rhythm. Alien Shores shows more vocal diversity with epic bard-like vocals.
“Concealed “is a very diverse metal album featuring band members with diverse musical backgrounds. This album should appeal to fans of Nile, Opeth, Arcturus, Cradle of Filth or anybody who plays music.
