Upon reviewing “Genocide”, I went over some of BLOODTHORN's discography. I was surprised to find that this band has been around since the early 1990's. The band used to be female fronted and have numerous forms of musical experimentation in it's grasps. However, with the release of “Genocide”, BLOODTHORN has reverted back to the earliest, purest form of extreme metal.
“Genocide” offers the listener intense blackened death metal with little room for wavering. Intense basslines, rattling blast beats, harsh growling, and destructive riffs offer little to the imagination. BLOODTHORN is seemlingly cut straight from the vein of bands such as BELPHEGOR, CANNIBAL CORPSE, and DEICIDE. That being said, the music is about as brutal as you can get.
However, with the frantic ferocity, I am reminded while listening to “Genocide” that I've heard this before. The bands above paved the way for this style and although it is thoroughly documented their influence in the spread of the genre, I personally still revert to the masters unless something is altered / experimented with. Although BLOODTHORN's assault is well-executed, it lacks originality. That is probably my only knock with “Genocide”. BLOODTHORN is solidly portrayed brutal death / black metal. Fans of these genres will enjoy “Genocide”.
