Cool Songs: Fucking Wizard, Eternal Forest, The Devil Rides Out
This is the second CD Ive reviewed by Finnish doom metallers, REVERAND BIZARRE. The first one In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend was very dark and slow. II: Crush the Insects, a later album for the group, is not quite as bleak sounding as the Rectory album. Although much of the album consists of sludgy, crawling doom, an equal amount of the album is set more towards a heavy rock/stoner rock style.
The opening track Doom over the World begins in with dark bar chord doom that rings out, enveloping the listener in electric negativity. The doomed intro soon transitions into a heavy rock type groove that is reminiscent of English doomsters CATHEDRAL. The rock vibe is further established later on in this track with the group all contributing to singing the songs doom over the world chorus. The sound of beer bottles clinking together in for cheers helps add to the songs doom metal festive mood. The Devil Rides Out and Cromwell continue these up beat, stonerific rhythms.
The happy countenance created through the first three tracks will turn grim and despondent when the fourth track hits. At the epic proportion of 13:27, Slave of Satan will send Christians running for a church and posers hiding under their mommys covers. This track takes a few minutes to get going with long intervals between each ringing guitar note. The drummer fills in each space with slow, massive drum pounds. He plays the drums on this track more like a gong than a drum kit. When the lyrics come in, the music drastically falls. The tones on this track are so fucking heavy that it is almost behind description.
The remainder of the album consists of diabolic, mammoth-sized doom set to the pace of a heart on the edge of expiration. Fucking Wizard is minimalistic doom in the grand tradition of Black Sabbaths Black Sabbath, rising dynamically at the opportune time. My favorite track of this last few is Eternal Forest. The bass is of an incredible weight and the lyrics are mystical and moving. Sir Albert Witchfinders vocals are definitely at top form on this track!
II: Crush the Insects is another superb offering from one of doom metals great. If you are a die hard fan of doom and this is the first time you have read of this band, trust my judgment and get some REVERAND BIZARRE. These guys are premo-doom-fucking-metal!
