SHADAR LOGOTH hails from the cold corner of the United State’s eastern coast, Maine. The blizzards, raging cold winters and primeval forests that comprise the band’s home base are given praise to in the form of SHADAR LOGOTH. When one considers how similar the U.S.’s northeastern coast is to Western Europe and Scandinavia, you would think more bands would seek to emulate the Oden-worshipping, folk black metal such as VINTERSORG, BORKNAGOR, and HIMINBJORG. Most bands prefer to release only the most evil, satanic black and death metal, leaving the cold, pagan hymns to the Norse.

SHADAR LOGOTH does not follow the trends of its fellow countrymen; instead, they praise the gods of pagan black metal. Vocalist Dan Eaton patterns his vocal style after the front man of BORKNAGAR, OTYG, and VINTERSORG—Vintersorg. Eaton alternates between primal, black metal screams and Nordic clean vocals. The clean vocals are especially remarkable in their strong resemblance to Vintersorg. His pitch and the way he accents the end of each verse is very similar to Vintersorg, and they achieve the same result by creating this sense of longing and might.

Eaton’s superb vocals seem to be the focal point and foundation of SHADAR LOGOTH’s music, although his band mates do well in supporting the front man’s artic bellows. The guitars maintain a biting cold tone. Old Emperor Tremolo riffs combined with galloping DIMMU BORGIR-style riffs make up the majority of their rhythms. The band uses guitar harmonies and acoustic guitars for melodic effect, but only in small portions. Keyboards are also sparsely used to create a slight-mystical background.

Normally, us Americans have to look over seas to find excellent pagan black metal, but thanks to SHADAR LOGOTH, we need look no further than our own borders. Their self-titled demo is a good emulation of what the Norse has to offer. I hope this album gets them the label recognition they deserve so they can put out an album with the same professional tools of the Norse.
