Cool Songs: Infitinte Battles for Immortality, The Invoking
At the Sacrifice of the Nazarene Child Fest 7, I discovered oil isnt Texas only black gold, the state also has a wealth of black metal bands. One group that caught my eye was Houston-based ADUMUS. Clad in battle gear and corpse paint, the group looked like an army of medieval warriors returned from the grave. They put on a good performance, so I wondered what they sounded like in the studio. Their guitarist, Moon gave me two of their albums for review (thanks man).
The first album Infinite Battles for Immortality is their debut demo released in 1999. This four-song offering bears a strong resemblance to fellow Texans ABSU, most notably the Barathrum V.I.T.R.I.O.L. era. The meaty, down-tuned guitars grind away at a similar fashion to Barathrum V.I.T.R.I.O.L. Also, the group incorporates an occasional death growlin the case of The Invokingthey alternate death and black metal vocals on each line of a verse.
The bands battle image is reflected occasionally in their music. The title track shows the band sounding the horn to signal the coming of war with battle marching drums and majestic keyboards. The keyboard intros on most of the songs are of note due to their grandiose, mystical nature. Keys are utilized throughout the album, but are used sparingly, adding a faint, dark backdrop to the appropriate musical break.
Infinite Battles is an interesting collection of four tales of triumphant evil. The only qualm I have with the album is the poor recording. The guitars are barely audible and there is a fuzzy noise that is easily noticeable during the track breaks. This is a demo, though, and the music is a good augury. Expect future endeavors to be vastly improved in sound quality.
