In 2005, SEMARGL released a descent black metal album in “Attack on God.” The problem with that album was the band seemed unsure of what direction they wanted to pursue. Death growls seemed out of place and the band jumped around a bit too much. What a difference a year can make, though. 2006 shows the band releasing “Satanogenesis,” a marked improvement over the prior album. Rutarp did the band a favor in seldom using his death growls.

The guitar sound largely remains the same, although more prevalent than the past album. “Satanogenesis” shows the band stripping down its music and concentrating more on guitars and bass. Although there is an occasional infusion of dark, keyboard atmosphere, the bulk of the album consists of malefic, crunching guitar and drum blasts. The keys are still present, but so are cerebral, ambient black noises like the kind GORGOROTH produces. Where the prior effort looked to symphonic black metal for inspiration, “Satanogenesis” seeks out guitar-based Norwegian black metal like GORGOROTH, MAYHEM, DARKTHRONE, and SATYRICON.

The guitars have more of a grinding feel and come across more sinister with twisted string bends. Tracks like “Funeral of a Beast” and the aptly-titled “Graceful Infection by Evil” move slow and lethal like a plague. Guitarist Shaddar stirs a cauldron of witch’s spells with churning, low-end riffs before adding an ingredient that makes the fire whoosh up with twisting string bends. At other moments, the band charges straight-ahead into glorious battle. The double bass fires off short burst like an AK-47 or sets the mood for battle with marching drum beats.

SEMARGL stands toe to toe with black metal greats like DARKTHRONE, MAYHEM, and GORGOROTH. Through making “Satanogenesis” the group has grasped the concept of how to make rhythms that paint the air with infection and disease. Like Pandora when she opened the forbidden box, Deathgasm released evil upon the world. This evil is known as SEMARGL!
