Cool Songs: Reincarnated, Brother of Black Metal, Funerary # 1, Carpathian
Not to be confused with a multitude of bands with the same name, CONSPIRACY is a one-man black metal group from Holland. There are many inviting aspects of their latest album Reincarnated. Death metal cover art icon, Dan Seagrave (DISMEMBER, EDGE OF SANITY artist) painted the cover art. His use of radiant colors, especially crimson, is bound to catch the eye of an educated, observant death metal fan. The groups sole member, Carpathian Wolf (he also played bass in MELECHESH ) creates black metal that straddles the line between necro and polished. Because the music is not confined to just one area of the black metal scene, Reincarnation should find appeal throughout the realms of black metal.
Reincarnated includes the typical black metal rhythms created by blasting drum beats and coldly toned, cross-picked guitar riffs. Many of the rhythms consist of sliding scales, so the sound comes across in a triumphant way. These elements are part of the whole, but do not entirely define the groups sound. Songs such as the title track and Funerary #1 feature tranquil moments of distortion-less guitar coupled with slow, harmonic electric guitar leads. Wolf uses these passages to build strong dynamics.
Virgins Blood opens the album in a similar fashion, but uses ringing guitars and voice effects as a lead in to a more frenzied pace. Wolf uses harmony to build as well as to deconstruct speed and heaviness. CONSPIRACY has also instilled a good amount of thrash into their sound. Many places show the one-man show digging in with speed picking and galloping classic metal and thrash rhythms. Folky clean vocals bring in “Carpathian” as further evidence of Wolf's diverse musical roots, recalling Scandinavian folk/black metal acts like ISENGARD and VINTERSORG.
Overall, I would say CONSPIRACYs sound falls somewhere between GEHENNA and LORD BELIAL. Reincarnated contains plenty of catchy black, death, thrash, and even power metal riffs, yet finds its foundation in black metal. The raw, throaty screeches emanating from Wolfs voice box unquestionably define this release as pure black metal. There is nothing groundbreaking here, but the song writing is good enough to warrant spending a few bucks.
