Cool Songs: Liturgical Desecration, For Rats and Plague, Rise of the Black Moon
MANTICORE features members of the United States Midwest metal scene. The groups members have played in bands such as EMBALMBER, SOMNUS, BLOOD COVEN, and INCANTATION. These members have come together like a gathering of black wizards to create an album that is fast, raw and wicked on For Rats and Plague. The guitars grind away with a skin-scraping rawness. The drums blast away almost continuously. Even though the drums pound with the force of Lucifers hammer, the guitars are still near the front of the mix, making their sound thick and heavy.
The drums mostly drive with arm-cramping speed, but make the occasional stop for a doomy drop. The slow, doom-laden parts show the band at its best. Rise of the Black Moon(ARCHGOAT cover) features slow, ringing chord moments that when combined with an ominously ringing bell seem to spread out into the air like a demonic solar eclipse. The vocals are a mix of slightly raspy, but still discernable black metal type growls and ultra low guttural growls.
For Rats and Plague once again proves the black metal in the U.S. is every bit as strong as the rest of the world. Sure, not everything MANTICORE does on this album is purely original, but they do it well and keep it raw. Also, they gather elements from bands such as BEHERIT, ARCH GOAT, MORBID ANGEL, SODOM, and BLASPHEMY and add their own, Midwest death metal twist. Fans of USBM who stitch their denim jackets with patches of the above bands should check out this one.
