Cool songs: In Deaths Design
After some years of being involved in various music projects, Eirik and Torgeir eventually decided to create a project of their own. So they banded some musicians and formed a band whose name was taken from one of the episodes of TV series MacGyver. A very imaginative and original way of getting a name, but that is not the point of this discussion. Demo 2006 is their first album, one may hope that not the last.
There is no doubt about the fact, that SARPEDON knows how to move the crowd. That powerful start is an excellent beginning in the career. This progressive metal with elements similar to Swedish FALCONER, is a good piece of metal music. The riffs are heavy, fast and furious. What is more, they constantly change – the pace, motifs and sounds change quite often, not to say too often. I had an impression that by In Deaths Design the band wanted to show that their heads are filled with hundreds of ideas, which only await to be excavated. They should have concentrated on four, maybe five of them, not recording a song, which is very incomprehensible because of the avalanche of ideas. After listening to it, for an hour (for example) it is still impossible to hum it – everything chops and changes. The other two compositions are also varied (but less fortunately) and very melodic. They help us to recover after that sound-shock. Which does not change the statement, that the album is quite good.
A good start is something very important for every band. SARPEDON did well, not do say overdid. It is impossible to place so much material within eleven minutes – they manage to do it. Maybe they could not decide, what to place and what not? If so, this can have bad effects in the future.
