This is probably one of the most well known metal bands from the Eastern territories. RUDRA, created in 1992, is now a veteran, with a high position in the death/black metal world. At the beginning, when the line up was consolidating, the band was called RHUDRA and they played a thrash/death metal. Later on the group decided to play Vedic Metal – a way of paying tribute to their culture.
Kurukshetra is a typical black metal release, very powerful, aggressive, enriched by some melodic death components, but still, quite usual one might say. I expected something more, from a band from Singapore, but that is not the main disadvantage. Here, the weakest point is the content itself: the music is aggressive, indeed, although it is also very monotonous, not catchy and does not bring anything new to the metal scene. The tribute stuff is present in the lyrics, but the sound is totally deprived of these unique elements. What is more, the guitars do not sound well, their should have been re-mixed and re-mastered. On the other hand, the drums are fantastic, they pulverize with power, which they create and help other instruments to keep up. But still, this does not save the album from a breakdown, because it is very predictable, monotonous and the songs sound very much alike.
Kurukshetra is not a bad album, but it is not fantastic either. The riffs (especially at the beginning) repetitions kill the pleasure from listening, create a dull atmosphere and eventually help to decide where to put this album on your shelf.
