Dublin, 2004, a couple of guys – that is the recipe for ERA VULGARIS, one of British more interesting band, in terms of progressive play. What Stirs Within is their debut album and thanks to it, the band started to gain momentum. After some enthusiastic reviews in the media, it is time for checking it out right here.
This progressive metal with strong thrash influences is a good proposition for fans of both genres. This music is very raw, powerful, just like a battery. Progressive play with the thrash elements sound very interesting, what is more, do not allow boredom to enter the circle. Of course the music is not superb, but everybody has to start somehow. And in case of ERA VULGARIS this start is quite fascinating. First of all, is the huge dose of energy, which simply fills with enthusiasm towards the whole project and the future releases. It is audible that the band are treating the audience seriously, which is a big plus, though many such groups try to sell their shit to passers by. But I do not appreciate one thing, which is the post-hardcore vocal, which simply does not fit the music, but all in all, it is a progressive material, so something odd has to shock. Some will definitely like it, I actually did not, and am not trying to persuade anyone to treat it my way. The pseudo-death growl, appearing somewhere, being quite shy, has a stronger effect than those yells. But the music: sound and ideas, are good. Nice performance just sweeps away the unpleasant impression created by the singing act.
Total verdict is quite good. I deliberately overused the word quite to stress, that this album is nothing more than a well prepared and performed progressive metal, with cool thrash elements. Which really bring hope and create a waiting atmosphere next album or bust.
