Cool songs: everything!
JOE SATRIANI, or the great SATCH is a person, who does not need to be introduced, not today, and never again, as he has done so much for the rock music, that probably he has already got a reserved place in the guitar Valhalla. In 2007 it was 20 years since Surfing with the Alien was recorded and released, and that is why JOE and Epic/Legacy Recordings decided to re-release it, enriching it with a DVD with a live show from Montreux (never-before-seen) plus some collectors items (photos, sessions, writings, etc..). Of course it is obvious that they went for the cash and commercial success, knowing that this music will guarantee it, as it is a part of rock history, part of every rock fan, part of everyone of us.
And that is why reviewing this album is something which has no sense at all. It has been reviewed at least one-hundred times and this opinion would not change anything. But in terms of such a bigwig as SATCH, one can make an exception. The difference between those two releases is very slight – as the music has been refreshed, re-mastered and re-mixed. But the sound is still the same, and everyone would recognize old uncle JOE and his legendary compositions. Starting with a classic opening title track, with fantastic fingerings, showing only a little percent of his abilities, moving to more classic Crushing Day, to stop for a moment at Always with Me, Always with You, to take a deep breath and contemplate the magnificent sound of guitar and the mighty calmness exploding [sic!] straight from it. Not to mention the wacky Satch Boogie, poetic Hill of the Skull, acoustic Circles (with a surprising kick), insane Midnight, and one of the most recognizable bass lines in history – Echo. A pure festival of sounds, in the same way as being remembered in 1987, the same fantastic musical atmosphere, a huge concert on the heart and soul of an artist – some things will never change, and Surfing with the Alien is one of them. A pure classic from the very top of the rock-shelf. Brings the same memories and feelings, just like 20 years ago. This music has not grown old at all. It is universal, it creates the universe, which is swathed in sound. It is a sentimental journey, a sentimental confession, on a sentimental level, about sentimental experience. Nothing more but THE HEART OF CLASSIC!
