The Finnish capital city, Helsinki, is not only famous for its sobering-up station, which is the biggest in all Europe, but mainly thanks to the cultural background, part of which are MOONSORROW, a band created in 1995, by two cousins, Ville and Henri Sorvali. They describe their music as epic heathen metal, as the general idea of their music is to create epic metal art with a good touch of national romanticism and a distinctively pagan approach. Throughout the years of evolution, the music is still the same, which is its biggest strength.
The album is kept in an epic climate, comprising of only two songs (the previous albums counted from five to seven extremely long tracks), composed of smaller compositions, joined perfectly, without any audible and artificial elements. Everything goes very smoothly, from the beginning, when the album starts in a poetic way, with a strong support of the keyboards and clear, subtle vocal. Later on it develops into a melodic death metal symphony, supported by folk gems, which create a fantastic sound feast. The ideas used on this album are not maybe innovative, but they are combined in such a crafty way, that everything sounds as if it had been played for the first time – the progressive momentum is audible all the time. After a few minutes it is easy to notice that things constantly chop and change, leaving no time for contemplating, as it is necessary to concentrate on another motifs and features. This album is superb, and should be treated with great respect.
It is a musical orgy, and be aware of the fact, that such things do not happen often, as it is extremely difficult to find something original today. But MOONSORROW show, that they have a good recipe for fantastic music, what is more, they have got the idea, how to feed the listeners with it.
