Cool Songs: Priests of Sodom, To Decompose, Evisceration Plague, Carnivorous Swarm
In the realm of death metal, none are more influential than CANNIBAL CORPSE. In its twenty-plus lifespan, CANNIBAL CORPSE has paved the way for gurgle-mouthed-gut-stomping-bone-sawing-horror-show death metal groups around the world. CANNIBAL CORPSE popularized blast beats and buzz saw guitar soundsmajor facets of the modern metal sound. The group has seen its fair share of lineup changes, and the last couple of albums (Kill and The Wretched Spawn) failed to relate the catchy rhythms of past efforts such as Vile and Tombs of the Mutilated. However, with their newest release, Evisceration Plague CANNIBAL CORPSE has returned to the wicked ways of yore.
Part of the problem CANNIBAL CORPSE ran into with the past two records was their lyric writing. Many of the songs had too many details, so the band often had to split a line in two or just speed through it. Evisceration Plague shows the band writing shorter lines to bring a greater amount of attention to groove. Tracks such as Skewered From Ear to Ear, A Cauldron of Hate, and the title track focus on sharp guitar tones that churn at a mid pace. These tracks do have their fast parts, but CC waits until the song builds in momentum before drummer Mazurkiewicz brings the heat. CC keeps the tempo diversity through much of the album, although tracks such as Beheading and Burning and Scalding Hail never release their blistering pace.
All the players involved with Evisceration Plague are at the top of their game. Pat OBrien and Rob Barrett play trade off memorable licks, often starting a killer riff in one speaker until the rest of the group steps in. To Decompose and Skewered From Ear to Ear feature classic stomp rhythms. The later track includes some of the most technical solo work from the CC camp. The guitar work from the two brings to the life the buzzing sound of swarming insects on Carnivorous Swarm, ending with eerie feedback and wild whammy bar noises. Original members Mazurkiewicz and Webster keep the rhythms tight, especially during many of the technical turns. George Corpsegrinder Fisher does not have the deep growls of many bands, but his mastery of tempo and blood-curdling screams are top notch.
CANNIBAL CORPSE has thought up musical scenarios for just about every method to maim, molest, torture, kill, and dispose of the body that humanity has to offer. Maybe the group pushed itself too much writing the past couple of records; the devil in the details never emerged from hell. On Evisceration Plague the group has penned songs as brutal (maybe not as perverse) as any of their past releases, but has done it in a way that relates much better musically. Just when the death metals old guard seems to be fading away, CANNIBAL CORPSE thrusts Evisceration Plague straight up our pooper, letting us know they arent going away anytime soon!
