Cool songs: My Body, A Funeral, The Lies I Sire, Echoes From A Hollow Soul
No other album has been listened more insistently by my ears in the last months than “For Lies I Sire”. Thus it might be impossible to make an objective review of it, but which one has ever been objective? We're not scientists or art critics, we just tell what we thought while listening to certain album and what bands came to our head; that's the great chance this music and this time give us.
If I've chosen songs from the first half of the album it isn't because the rest goes under regarding quality -the whole album is pure poetry-, it's because I didn't expect such depressing grace when I started playing this record. “My body a Funeral” can perfectly sum up what the work is made of. An outstanding beginning which must make proud Doom Metal and the town of Halifax.
As many others might think, unlike Paradise Lost and Anathema, MY DYING BRIDE has never left the sacred roots of doomed Metal. I mean, Anathema has made a great job with its recent work but it has changed, in fact, On the contrary, after some experimentation, MY DYING BRIDE is back rocking and raising up the title of masters of deep incurable sadness.
Nowadays, Gothic stuff tends to be unbelievably happy, focusing on superficial heartbreaks and, at best, on erotic matters. Well, sadness gets a real meaning in every song recorded on “For Lies I Sire”. Almost an hour of great music supported by a beautiful violin -missed for several years- played by Katie Stone, who took this task until June 9, 2009, as she replaced Sarah Stanton because of her pregnancy,
Moreover, Aaron Stainthorpe remains invincible along the album, though I would dare to criticize his growling vocals since they aren't as good as his clean vocals, at least that's what we can find on the blackened “A Chapter in Loathing”. What about guitars? Those are damn good Doom guitars, that's all. Anyway, this is an album that can tear any mortal apart. Not you? Let me tell you that if you can stand the passage in the middle of “Santuario di Sangue” as if nothing it's because you're made of shit.
