In between pressing the play button and being brutally, audibly assaulted by EYEHATEs brand of extreme metal, theres barely enough time to prepare yourself for the onslaught of thick, chugging 8-stringed axe riffs well teamed with both prominent melodies and gutteral growls.
The first and foremost element that binds Italys EYEHATE is the musical consistency maintained throughout Do You Remember God, a technique which is often many bands downfall. At times, this consistency slips into repetition but not in such a way that it renders the bands debut entirely intolerable. Its difficult to shake off the CHIMAIRA and GOD FORBID-esque vibes resonating from several of the tracks, but this is not to be taken a criticism as theyve managed to do so without blatantly plagiarising.
It takes several listens to be able to understand Do You Remember God in more depth. EYEHATE work the metal-verse-melodic-chorus formula throughout, and perhaps if the clean singing was omitted theyd have something a little stronger to present. However, the melodic backing vocals on Reasons For… is most enjoyable, making this probably the most memorable track on the album, while Right Perspective Fallin exhibits the most moshing potential.
Brutal riffs are all well and good, but something doesnt seem quite complete. Part of the vital metal formula is absent. Though there are a few brief lead guitar licks, some fret-grinding solos or at least some more adventurous axe action would be the icing on the cake.
Not an effort to be taken lightly by any means; for a debut its very impressive. Its not astonishingly innovative or groundbreaking, but then again, too many bands have tried to be original to the point where its NOT original anymore. Keen listeners arent always looking for something daring and unique, so if its something a little safer or familiar youre after but still want the satisfaction of a good metal record, then look no further.
