RECKONING STORM is an individual project founded in 2006 by the Pakistan-based guitarist Saad. A. Ali, who has made some previous EPs and now presents these 30 minutes of instrumental work as a whip of metal riffing.
The acoustic guitar on the first track displays some kind of METALLICA's “One” intro and typical Prog backing vocals in order to create a good expectance atmosphere. But the following two tracks are intros too, so we have five minutes waiting when the long main theme finally starts to play. Shred Guitar and Heavy Metal picking is present all along from this point and on. Ali has focused his efforts on one thing and it's clear, no Fusion, no weirdness.
To my mind, the sixth track is the best and more colorful of the recording, it runs on a nice pace and has good rhythm changes too. On the other hand, the outro track is an orchestral non-guitar theme that fits very well and gives a nice ending sophistication, but has a premature abrupt end itself.
The concept is quite in the tradition of contemporary guitar heroes, most of which never offer anything really outstanding. Despite his attempts of grandiloquence, Ali is not a “godspeed” or any other superhuman creature, but shows passion for metal, and that's great indeed. Anyways, speed ain't all. Personality has to come out with patience and practice. Otherwise, “SAAD A. ALI'S RECKONING STORM” will seem another simple non-classical replica of “YNGWIE MALMSTEEN'S RISING FORCE”.
For those willing to give this album a try, “The Storm Engine” is also a completely free download at the RECKONING STORM official website. A good sound considering that it is a production performed at zero monetary cost.
