Cool Songs: Hammer And Life, The Sun Is My Destroyer, Class Dismissed
Exodus have developed a taste for subtle intros as of late, thus explaining the soothing start to The Ballad Of Leonard And Charles that fires our anticipation before the brutal stuff commences. As the dueling guitar leads pave the way for the machinegun percussion, Exodus careen headlong into epic territory as Rob Dukes, Gary Holt, and the rest of the gang deliver ultraviolent thrash with all guns blazing. The Ballad clocks in at five minutes plus and though Exodus have yet to master how to pull off an epic song, the opener to their latest is a worthy first taste of the delights awaiting the expectant listener on this Exhibit B.
Never letting their momentum slide, the two hit combo Beyond The Pale followed by the empowering anthem Hammer And Life socks you in the testicles until the homicidal diatribe Class Dismissed kicks the door down and unleashes a barrage of bullets. Anyone with but a passing awareness of events in Columbine and that Korean guys rampage through a university might be a little disturbed by the graphic lyrics, which of course increases its appeal as Rob Dukes hollers Everywhere I look a war is being waged. Class Dismissed might very well be the most extreme song Exodus have ever tackled. Whether its the music or the riff-driven tempo, it simply breathes malevolence and aggression. Dont miss the part toward the end where Dukes breathes I deconstruct you/Until my hate has fucked you along to a throbbing beat. Thats some scary shit.
A slew of passable songs follow and discriminating ears may fault the band for these. On Downfall and March of the Sycophants, even the slower paced Nanking, Exodus stand guilty of peddling filler. These may be rather good songs, but we really expect more from such a capable band. Fortunately the album gets back on track for the incinerating diatribe Burn, Hollywood, Burn where Dukes consigns Tinsel Town to the flames while the Holt-Lee Altus guitar tandem loose an ass-ripping solo. If theres a single consolation on this albums latter segment, it really is the guitar work, which punches you right in the family jewels. The almost-death metal vibe of The Sun Is My Destroyer sends molten lava pouring forth from your speakers until the last stretch of punishing material. Exhibit B isnt perfect, but it is pretty goddamn solid.
