Australian label Soundmass sent me several discs to review… I was very surprised when there I saw Polish band MALCHUS – the unknown for me Polish band which exists 6 years… Therefore MALCHUS went on first fire… and their music surprised me very favourably! I did not acquaint with the information added to the disc nor I did not look at booklet and I have put in the silver disc quickly… Music from the disc of “Didymos” absorbed me from the beginning… As early as from gloomy-keyboards' intro with Latin recitation to the music, which went to heavy and brutal tacts with huge dose of melody… The monumental guitars riffs decorated by dynamic work of drums, the melodic play of keys (even masterly sometimes), the guitars solos as well as the multicoloured layers of vocals (from predatory growling to calm singing and declamation) emanate from the loudspeakers… The music sounds very firmly, even charismatic in moments, other time it sounds very gently and melancholic. Suddenly I realized that MALCHUS is singing in Polish (!!!) and very clearly… And their lyrical layer is sunken in mystic-Christian subject area (!!!). This is already the second team playing Christian Metal in this month. Is it some Egyptian plague?
The Metal in realization of MALCHUS is very inspired by Holy Spirit and that inspiration is very deeply expressed. Their music rather was associated with Christian crusade of Templar than peaceful prayers of seminarians. Their the musical dynamics (and even the aggression) also strongly were associated with Pagan Metal scene and despite that MALCHUS stands in opposition to this scene that they use the same weapons – the strong lyrical transfer and the music strongly inspired by emotions – once time ago some Polish Pagan/Black/Death Metal hordes of type THY WORSHIPER and SEMINARIUM did it similarly.
MALCHUS is very curious connection of heaviness, of power and of melodics of Doom/Death Metal with complexity and variety of Progressive Metal… Moreover the all crushing guitar-vocal subjects as well as melodious expressions of keyboards were wrapped in climatic darkness here. This music possesses many dynamics and feelings as well as charisma – how I earlier mentioned.
