A few days ago I received a mail board of the Belgian band – Shellcase, namely the second, still fresh release under the title – “Esperanza”. I must admit that I had a slight problem with getting down for this review because they offer the music this band is not made my particular taste. I'll try to be objective as possible, pulling as many positive aspects of these sounds.
Gentlemen of Shellcase play alternative rock-influenced grunge and nu-metal. Generally, everything in this music is in the right place, from good professional sound, to the skills of the musicians themselves. Lots of cool melodic vocals, a good feeling of the rhythm section, and interesting guitar work – from hard rock intensity, to the delicate little post-rock accretions. Music, despite the heavier moments is very affordable and even pop. A pleasant and relaxing album, sounding very American.
In conclusion I must add a few critical remarks. Shellcase is trying to interest a wider audience with his music, but even so the team could not avoid the pitfalls secondariness. These sounds were popular a decade ago and not much can compete with the classics such as: Filter and Godsmack or hated by fans of metal – Linkin Park. Music that suggests the band is not bad, but I think they just missing a bit of originality. Maybe the third plate shows the potential of this team and they kick our ass properly!
