There was the time when Gothic Metal bands with female vocals often have caressed my ears… Now, after the many hearings, I know the cross-beam is high. I not hide that NIGHTWISH with Tarja Turunen (though is not Gothic) has raised the beam to very high level and there are few other bands which play so good…
VIRGIN ISLAND offers a quite good Gothic Metal – heavy, dynamic and atmospheric with female vocals, which is pretty Operatic often bringing a lot of pathos… But a lot of vocals are on the border of singing and recitations to the music and that definitely distinguishes VIRGIN ISLAND from NIGHTWISH… And I not deny – the accents in which I hear the operatic singing most excite me in music of VIRGIN ISLAND. It is truly a monumental… with heavy riffs and climatic keyboards. It sounds really sublime. And some guitar solos and keyboard passages are Able to deepen this melancholic-dark mood… And I also associated some themes with the beginnings of THE GATHERING with Anneke.
The compositions of VIRGIN ISLAND are arranged interesting. We will hear there both the strong and quick accents as well as nostalgic ballad's themes. However, I feel that the sound of guitars is not fully worked (it is too sharp, for such kind of Metal) and also some vocal parts.
After all, VIRGIN ISLAND has good ideas for their music.
