Pensees Nocturnes is the third and last band I've reviewed from the French label – Ladlo productions. “Nom d'une Pipe” is currently four album of this one-man project, conducted since 2008 by the nickname – Vaerohn. Earlier recordings by this artist are not known to me, so I looked inside the CD and was expecting something similar in terms of music to the previous band, reviewed here recently from the same label by me – Way To End. With very positive feelings after contact with that crew i was expected of another portion of the avant-garde metal experience, but what I heard after few listening of Pensees Nocturnes, made me totally surprised, because is not a typical metal band, maybe only in some moments of all album.
The basis of this music is theatrical, understatement, stylistic madness and climate change, black metal is only in a small amount of vocals and riffs which are lost in the thicket of sounds and arrangements. The range of species is so vast that it is difficult to figure out which of the influences is more dominant than the other, because all the elements intermingle with each other, forming a kind of controlled chaos. Classical music type interacts with film music and military songs, folk, such as the Balkans and Arab influences, avant-garde, psychedelic, jazz, there's even a place for dub and reggae. The entire album floats climate of grotesque, nihilism and even a circus atmosphere, where hordes of insane clowns pop out from every places of magician coat, mocking the people and reveling in the unbridled madness of temporality. Emotions change like a kaleidoscope, once music are lofty and pathetic, sad for a moment and depressing and other times wonderfully beautiful, like in life … Trumpet, saxophone, varied vocals, accordion, guitar and rhythm section create a fantastic journey, a journey full of colors, emotions, associations, where the first place plays the mind and its impassable abyss. Circus madness, debauchery and magic movie theater in those fifty minutes, leading us through the land of pain, beautiful, absurd, romantic and emotional thousands of other sites. The genius of this music just shocking, it is closer to the forms of classical music and orchestral than the typical sort of metal carnage. Very difficult for me to refer to any band that was playing or still play or something similar, it is generally approximately resultant of theatrical experiments of Scandinavian – Arcturus with Mike Patton group – Fantomas and improvised madness from the band – Swans.
Pensees Nocturnes is excellence, imagination, creativity and technology in terms of total. Music extremely demanding, you have to spend at least a few plays of album to put together all pieces in one entirety, but the experience in studying these sounds are incredibly phenomenal. An absolute recommendation for all the people who are looking for something more in music than just repeated over and over again a few aggressive riffs.
