AUSTRALASIA – interview with Gian Spalluto

„… While composing „Notturno” i used to spend a lot of time working by night… Some tracks are inspired by a feeling or a special moment… I struggle to reach inner balance and creating music is extremely important to keep it and express myself…” – Gian Spalluto

Where did the idea for the name?

I was looking for a word with the same meaning in english and italian, possibly related to travelling. Furthermore, Pelican is one of my favourite bands and one of their best records is named „Australasia” . Let’s say that the choice was a result of all these elements combined.

I understand that the choice of cover -art was also not accidental?

The cover artwork reflects the musical content of the album. It is inspired by old natural science manuals and engravings and obviously by the night side of nature.

What is so fascinating at night?

While composing „Notturno” i used to spend a lot of time working by night. I found myself feeling very comfortable during these lonely moments. Their atmosphere has been such a great inspiration.

Did only the nature inspired you to create the album? Where do you get ideas for writing songs? Maybe there also are some external stimulus, your ups and downs?

The idea of nature that you can find on the album is a secret place to let the thoughts flow peacefully. Some tracks are inspired by a feeling or a special moment. For instance „Creature” has been written after my father gave me a picture of him in is 20’s riding a motorcycle. I felt something special emanating from that photo and tried to transfer into music that sensation.

Why did only the one song from the album of “Notturno” is with vocals? And is it a coincidence that this song sets the center of the album?

I felt like „Invisible” was the only track that needed some vocals and asked to Mina Carlucci, also vocalist for the band „Vostok” to record some singing on it. She did a superb job and the track is set right at the centre of the album to mark the passage from the first to the second half of „Notturno”.

I wonder… What does the man who creates so interesting the musical work find himself in ordinary everyday life? What are you for every day?

I’ve an ordinary life just like millions other people. I struggle to reach inner balance and creating music is extremely important to keep it and express myself.

And is your private and occupational life such interesting as your work? What does the man who has proven himself as an artist for everyday?

I’m an office worker in a hotel. Nothing really exciting. I prefer the part where i’m in my studio having fun making some music.

How do you rest? …by thinking, creating and realizing your musical ideas?

Writing music can be very demanding and stressful, i wouldn’t consider it like resting. To relax i like reading, running or cooking, even if i’m not very good at it.

Has the music got an impact on your life? Or maybe vice versa, a life affects for your music?

Music affects my life in an extraordinary way, giving great incentives during stalemates and bad times. On the other hand, anything that happens to me can be poured in my musical creations.

Have you got other passions outside of music yet?

I love travelling and mountain biking. I used to read a lot of books in the past but almost stopped a couple of years ago. I really don’t know why, i just felt like doing it.

What in life is most important to you?

Spending time doing what i like and with the people i love. Leaving a mark, even if shallow, on this world. Trying to live a meaningful existence.

You mentioned Shoegaze (among other genres) as your musical inspirations. Why Shoegaze?

When it comes to clean guitars shoegaze bands always have some great ideas. Take anything from Ride, My Bloody Valentine or a Place to Bury Strangers. Their guitar patterns are totally mind blowing.

Was the earlier album “Vertebra” in the same mood as “Notturno”?

Not at all. While „Vertebra” is a collection of songs, each one with its own purpose, „Notturno” can be taken like a single piece with a single focus and a common atmosphere unwinding along the whole record.

Do you have an idea for a new album?

The current idea is to focus on something very slow and deep. I’m not sure how i will develop this, i still have a very few guitar riffs and synth licks saved, i need some time to let them ripen and try different ways to express them.

The last message belongs to you and I hope that to surprise us?

Thanks for this space. I really enjoyed answering your questions and had to take some time to think about before answering. Usually interviews are quite quick and easy to make, i found this one much more personal and fun. A message to everyone who would like to know more about Australasia, the whole discography is available on my Bandcamp page: https://australasia.bandcamp.com Thank you!
