As a rule, I am open to various kinds of musical innovations and experiments, so this time I took with curiosity this material… DRUG HONKEY will celebrate its 20th anniversary in next year and they have 6 albums, including one live album. However, I received the re-edition of the second album from 2005, released again in 2017 by Hohlraum Records…
“Hail Satan” presents fairly strange music… The buzzing sounds of Synthesizers and industrial-noise samples coexist with simple structures of distorted and not quite standard guitar riffs, conducted by the most commonly growling-screaming vocals (often with reverb and other effects). The whole is rhythmic thanks to the work of the drums, which usually creates quite slow trance rhythm, albeit with accentuating passages and accelerations. I think the rhythm section is best presented here as the classic form… As cool drums hits combined with the trance-psychedelic melody of pure bass referring to the protoplasts of Doom Metal.
The material sounds very rough and is coarse-grained (which probably is caused by the sound of guitars), very gloomy and dark, and terribly psychedelic, even psychotic (which was also caused by different samples and vocalizations).
In this music is the added GODFLESH atom. I also sensed it. However, this should not be suggested the similarity with the general association of the music. “Hail Satan” is experimental psychedelic-industrial Doom Death Metal, perhaps created as a result of intoxication with intoxicants.
