There was a time when After The Burial and bands like Veil of Maya and Born of Osiris got an immense recognition for their expertise in crafting a genre which was later on called as Technical/Progressive Metalcore. Even though bands like Shai Hulud and Poison The Well were the ones who made such experimentation but, VOM and ATB were the ones who made this be widely accepted among the community. After a 3 years of long gap, I was fortunate enough to find a Metalcore band who bring the ATB vibes into their music. The German “Technical” Metalcore newcomers brought back the tech/prog vibes in metalcore with their sophomore effort, Apparatus.
Formed in the year 2010, The Sleeper recorded their debut album with the producer who have previously worked with one among my favourite bands, War From A Harlot’s Mouth. After releasing something what I’ll call a stereotypical Melodic Metalcore album, The Sleeper got back to recording with their sophomore effort. As an EP, the band made sure that they will keep the music as fresh as possible yet giving a nice little melodic punch while keeping the formula right.
Starting with Synthetic Gospel, a chaotic song which reminds me of ATB and ending with something like The God Of Suffocation, which is a melodic treat backed with some heavy breakdowns and harmonic riffs. The album as a whole flows throughout the end which is pretty rare in modern Metalcore scene where bands write something out of their head without much experimentation.
Overall, Apparatus is truly a magnificent album and undoubtedly, this is where Sleeper’s career is about to change. Like Rareform written by After The Burial- which got them immense fan following, Apparatus is one such album for The Sleeper which will surely be recognized by the people around the world. That being said, Apparatus is a must listen album.
