I’m sure I have gone through a ton of Progressive Metalcore before, and I can’t stop mentioning the huge talent for this specific genre. One such newer addition to the list of Prog Metalcore artists that I have mentioned is As Oceans. The band itself is quite popular among the underground bands and they most certainly are one of my favorite artists as well. Their sound is weighed heavily on the melody yet the aggressive counterpart does add that Metalcore-esque angst packed sound.
Their latest release, Still miles to go is one such release that revamped the Progressive Metalcore scene this year. Their sound is very different. Their song structure is a bit confusing compared to other bands and that’s why I love them. For example, the second track, Wanderer above the mist starts with a middle eastern sound which transits into their metalcore sound. If the same song was written by any other metalcore band, they would’ve followed up the Arabic influence with an earth-shattering breakdown which is normally executed by 90% of bands, hence making them unoriginal and boring. That’s why I prefer As Oceans. They followed up the Arabic sound for about 30 seconds to get a brilliant buildup and later on dropping a breakdown which is entirely different from the structure performed by most of the bands.
The tracklist is pretty solid and I hear huge influences of Oceans Ate Alaska, Born Of Osiris and other Prog infused Metal artists. As Oceans play a breakdown-centric progressive metalcore which focuses heavily on the buildup and the guitar parts following the breakdown so that the whole instrumentation stays in place.
Overall, As Oceans have written a great album which is worth spending your money over. Their music is bound to be heard outside the underground spectrum and I’m sure that these guys will make it big in near future.
