In a world where people often restrict their musical inclination to a particular style or genre, it is almost uncertain to come across a band trying to merge every genre to create something that would appeal the wide collective of masses. Crooked Flower, an Alternative Rock band who try to include some of the classy styles ranging from Indie Folk to Classic Country Music. This inclusion is a successful attempt and that is why I like the band and their new EP, Darkness and Light.
Having a strong Rock background, the inclusion of different styles put the vocalist in a situation where she must vary her vocal range and deliverance to match the instrumentation. The soothing soft vocals along with a midtempo instrumentation arrangement often tend to make the song slower and softer compared to your average hard rock band. The thing about Crooked Flower is that the songs are more catchy yet the mediocre instrumentation makes the song from being Anthemic. You can’t sing along to something that is not uplifting. The tempo must change to get the track to stand out. That’s probably the only thing that bothered me.
Reviewing a 4 song album and putting a score out is a difficult thing. Yet, Crooked Flower deserve a review for their minimilastic take on Rock. Not as minimilastic as a normal Avant Garde or an Experimental act yet, minimilastic in the sense different from the stereotypical Rock band. Definitely worth a spin and I hope the band take forward their marvellous talent and songwriting skills to a whole new level in future to make name for themselves in future.
