When is the last time you saw a Folk/Electronic experimental artist on the Metal Centre or, on the Internet in general. EDM is usually the most stereotypical genre. There are a few exceptions like Illenium, Varien, CloZee and many others but none of them are closer to the sound of Metaspion. Even though CloZee is the closest to Metaspion as her music is more of a contemporary dance music, Metaspion is a bit more than the Contemporary take. His music focus more on the Symphonic part than the Electronica. The new album Folktronika Schmolkfonika proves my point.
Moreover, there is a reason as to why I could include Metaspion on a Rock/Metal based website. Morten Richter, the brain behind Metaspion had a huge career on Rock before he thought of reinstituting himself to try something different. That’s how Metaspion became a reality. My point is, an artist evolve over the time as a result of boredom from playing the same music. If Morten transited from Rock to Electronica, Take a look at Ulver. Once a heavy Atmospheric Black Metal band and now they are Pop virtuosos.
A perfect album consisting of 11 well arranged tracks which is nothing like the stereotypical EDM. Sometimes it’s more of a necessity to listen to something softer to match the brutal and gnarly Metal you listened to during the day. The balance is required at right amount to make your music proficient to make a brilliant day. Look no further than Metaspion. The artist would be a perfect fit on your daily metal playlist. The reason for which is that his music is not that softer as the tempo usually goes higher which perfectly goes along with the softer vocals.
Old Rules don’t Apply, the first single released by Metaspion, is a perfect blend of the softness and elegance of Folk and the tempo changing electronic beats. The song has a strong symphonic backbone which carries the Electronica forward, consequently, ceasing the track with a good enough tempo clash. Likewise, Tvientaan is a memorable song which starts with a folkish instrumentation and an Anthemic chanting which is all put together with the Electronica to make the song sound different
There is a lot to talk about the album. As a huge fan of Illenium and CloZee, I pretty much enjoyed the album from the start to the near end. In fact I had the urge for repeating the songs again. Metaspion is a wiser take on Electronica and I doubt this would go unnoticed. I had the pleasure to review it before the initial released date and I’m sure the folks would love the Folkatronica. Metaspion.., you have a long road ahead of you man and I’m sure you’ll reach till the horizon faster than your tempo on your music.
